Magnificent per me e' tra le 10 canzoni piu' brutte degli U2. 

 

A me mai piaciuta, mi ha sempre ricordato i Simple Minds più pomposi (lo dico da persona a cui piace la band scozzese ) . Il testo poi lo trovo molto banale .

In No line due pezzi commercialmente cosi’ forti non ci sono.
L unico pezzo che poteva funzionare per immediatezza, epicita’ e sound e’ magnificent, che pero’ non decolla mai veramente ed il ritornello e’ forse il punto debole del pezzo, nel medio periodo come tutto l album si e’ rivelata un po’ pomposa

 

Non so, secondo me Breathe è un grandissimo pezzo alla "U2 di maniera degli anni 2000". Non capisco perché non ci abbiano puntato

Io continuo a pensare che il problema di fondo è stato un tour decisamente slegato dall'anima del disco, per cui han avuto bisogno di una serie di pezzi (Butz o Crazy tunz tunz) che si adattassero alla bisogna. Questo ha portato a snaturare l'intero progetto (sono parole di Brian Eno, eh, che all'epoca in maniera prosaica gli diede dei coglioni).

Magnificent invece per me è un bel pezzo, con un testo ispirato alle Sacre Scritture (il Magnificat) e un vestito sonoro che si riferisce un po' ai Talking Heads più pop e al classico sound epico degli U2. Sono altre le zarrate la dentro!

Anche a me Breathe piace piu’ di Magnificent ma nell ottica di avere un singolo radiofonico orecchiabile Breathe non era la piu’ adatta. Al di la’ dell intro lunghissima di batteria ha 2 pre chorus prima del ritornello, la strofa che e’ un mezzo rap… non esattamente immediato come pezzo.

U2’s “No Line on the Horizon” Turns 17

It’s been 17 years since U2 dropped No Line on the Horizon, and it remains one of their most divisive albums.

Released on February 27, 2009, the album reunited the band with producers Brian Eno and Danny Lanois — the dream team behind The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. The goal was clear: push boundaries and get experimental again after the more conventional rock sound of their 2000s work.

The lead single “Get On Your Get On Your Boots (la peggior canzone degli U2)” peaked at #37 on the US charts — a far cry from U2’s usual chart dominance. Critics were split. Some praised the band’s willingness to take risks and create atmospheric, textured soundscapes. Others felt the experimentation missed the mark.

Unlike their previous albums that spawned massive hits, No Line on the Horizon was designed as a complete listening experience. That approach didn’t exactly fit the iTunes era, and commercially, it underperformed compared to U2’s typical blockbuster releases.

Looking back, No Line on the Horizon occupies an interesting space in U2’s catalog. It’s not their most beloved album, but it showed a band refusing to coast on past success. They could have delivered another crowd-pleaser. Instead, they chose to experiment, even if it meant alienating some fans.

Whether you think it’s an underrated gem or a well-intentioned misfire probably depends on what you want from U2. But nearly two decades later, it’s worth revisiting with fresh ears.
