Dear Donna,
Welcome to ONE…
Bob Dylan and The Clash first showed U2 in the 1970's how music can put words and melodies to work in challenging the world around us, when the world around us isn't right. Something clicked for us, and everyone else, that heard them.
It was also then that Nelson Mandela, that great agitator, first called upon artists and bands to use their platforms to fight injustice. Back then, it was to challenge apartheid in South Africa. More recently, Mandela has led the fight against the injustice of extreme poverty. This week, as the world prays and gives thanks for him, one quote in particular has been swimming inside my head…
"Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is manmade and it can be overcome. Millions of people are trapped in the prison of poverty. It is time to set them free. Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation." Nelson Mandela, 2005.
The number of people living in extreme poverty has been slashed in half in the last twenty years. It can pretty much get to zero by 2030 - if the pressure is kept up for more of what works and less of what doesn't.
G8 world leaders are meeting this weekend in Northern Ireland. If you want to have a say in what they decide, click here.
Protest songs provide a soundtrack, they inspire - but your voices coming together are the ones that matter.
