7 aprile 1981, gli U2 sono in giro per gli Stati Uniti per lanciare Boy ed il promoter Steve Schankman, paga 750$ per farli suonare alla Graham Chapel a St. Louis.
Sold out istantaneo tra gli studenti che pagarono 15$ il biglietto di ingresso ed ovazione al termine dell’incandescente serata, molti riuscirono ad entrare senza biglietto dal retro.
Nel 2011 durante il concerto di St.Louis del 360Tour, ha ricordato quella serata ai 50mila presenti, rileggendo la ruggente scaletta di quella sera alla Graham Chapel.

Played in the pitch dark in a small chapel on campus on a quiet snowy nite
Sold out/ super small Medieval style chapel/ there was only a candle or two in the stage area/ super dark and mysterious atmosphere
There was no stage/ they played on the floor level

Impossible to find a ticket/ at least a dozen of us finally snuck in a back door some kind person opened for us

We ran up front as the first song played/ managed to remain in front of the first row of pews/ danced literally for the first time in my life, at the age of 29/ I haven't stopped since/ I was a hippie/ hippies never danced back then
We were just feet from the Edge and Bono all night
Super nite! What a concert! What a band!
They played I Will Follow, twice, including the sound of wine bottles rattling live from the dark behind the altar

Sentire cose come queste mi fa sempre pensare a quanto sarebbe stato meraviglioso poter assistere ai loro primi live.
Dubito che a 16 anni potrei esserci riuscito senza difficoltà ma leggere quanto linkato sotto mi fa venire un atroce dubbio che magari sarebbe capitato che venissero, forse neanche lontanissimo da casa.
Non è circostanziatissimo, però...
Magari se qualcuno riesce ad approfondire, dovrei essergli grato per rigirarmi il coltello nella piaga, oltretutto facendomi stramaledire PMG

Curioso questo articolo, secondo Renato, che non ne sapeva nulla, è un articolo di fantasia. Ma abbiamo scritto a Fran Tomasi, memoria storica di quegli anni e vediamo cosa risponde

Se avesse ancora il contratto sarebbe un bel cimelio, oltretutto si potrebbe usare per mettere gli U2 in condizione di dover riparare ad un torto con un concerto con scaletta early days

I was not surprised the great novelist was able to describe the attack on him on Aug. 12, 2022—as he was speaking about the U.S. as a safe place for exiled writers—with frame-by-frame specificity. Salman didn’t miss a detail as he recounted the crisis he had prepared for since 1989. What did surprise me was that he made me laugh. “Really?” he recalled thinking. “After 30 years? Amongst these most kindly, casually dressed readers in Chautauqua, New York?”

 

For me, rock ’n’ roll has always been about liberation. Salman’s continued creativity has become a different expression of that same liberation, a defiance and a determination not to be silenced. Of course there was anguish as he told me the story of the attack, but what was clear was that he would not bow. Freedom often loses but is never defeated.

"Got to the show a couple hours early expecting to see a big line, but we were the only ones there. After a while, a guy with an Irish accent comes out and asks if I know what time it is. I told him and asked if he was with the band. It was their road manager. I mentioned that I worked at the Marquette University radio station. He said too bad we didn't get there earlier ‘the boys would have loved to do an interview.’ 30 years later and I'm still kicking myself. Although I remember few of the details, I do remember thinking that they had the potential to be superstars. I've rarely seen any band fire up an audience like they did."
